Shaniwarwada Fort, situated in the Indian state of Maharashtra’s city of Pune, is a notable historical fortification. The fort was built by Peshwa Baji Rao I, the prime minister of the Maratha Empire, in 1732. It functioned as the seat of the Maratha Empire’s Peshwa rulers until 1818 when it was taken over by the British East India Company.

History of shaniwarwada fort

The Shaniwarwada palace has a tragic history dating back to 1773, when Narayanrao, the young Peshwa, was murdered by his own relatives in a power struggle. The assassination was plotted by his uncle Raghunath Rao and his wife Anandibai, who used members of the Kalbelia tribe as assassins. The next in line for the throne, at the time of Narayan Rao’s death, was Raghunath Rao. Narayan Rao and his servant Chapaji Tilekar were both killed. Seven priests/ministers, two servants, and two maids, a total of eleven people had been killed in the palace. One cow was also killed. It is said that as he was being chased by his attackers, he ran to his uncle’s room and shouted “Kaka mala vachva” (“Uncle, save me”). However, his uncle refused to help him, and Narayanrao was killed in front of him.

It is said that the palace became haunted after the incident, and locals claim to hear the cries of Narayanrao’s ghost at night. Unfortunately, the palace was destroyed in a fire in 1828, but a historical show is held in the evenings, which tells the story of the palace.
